Great Advancement Teams Celebrate Wins
Fundraising is rewarding work, but it can also be full of emotionally demanding ups and downs.
Advancement success rarely comes quickly. A major gift may require months (or years) of thoughtful cultivation before a commitment is made. Campaigns stretch across multiple fiscal years. Some philanthropic investor conversations lead to exciting next steps, while others end with a polite “not right now.”
If advancement professionals judge success only by dollars received or campaign milestones reached, they risk missing important opportunities to build culture and brand. The strongest advancement teams intentionally celebrate wins along the way.
Celebrate the Moments That Build Momentum
Every major gift has a backstory filled with small milestones. There are introductions, campus visits, thoughtful conversations, stewardship efforts, proposal revisions, and countless follow-up calls and emails. Those individual moments may not immediately show up in a fundraising report, but they are the building blocks of future success.
We encourage you to make a point of recognizing those milestones. Celebrate when a gift officer secures a first meeting with a prospective philanthropic investor. Celebrate a meaningful stewardship visit that strengthens a relationship. Recognize a board member who makes a valuable introduction or a colleague who helps tell your institution’s story in a compelling way. Celebrate a successful alumni event, a thoughtful donor proposal, or even an exceptional team collaboration.
When AdvancementEDU founder Chris Dudley was at High Point University, he celebrated his team by “working backward” from a major gift success. He would review every milestone along the journey that led to the major gift and celebrate each person who played a role in securing it. When leaders recognize these moments, they reinforce the behaviors they want their teams to repeat.
Recognition Builds Stronger Teams
Recognition reminds staff that meaningful work is happening, even when the largest gifts have not yet closed. It builds confidence, strengthens morale, and creates positive momentum during long campaigns or challenging fundraising seasons.
Just as importantly, celebrating success creates a healthy team culture. Colleagues should genuinely celebrate one another’s accomplishments. Try to build a culture that is less about individual performance and more about shared purpose and goals. A stewardship success benefits everyone. A new relationship today may become tomorrow’s transformational gift.
Share Your Institution’s Success Story
Celebration should go well beyond the walls of your advancement office. Tell your broader community about your larger philanthropic successes.
When your institution completes a campaign, receives a transformational gift, opens a donor-funded facility, or celebrates the impact of scholarships, share those stories often and proudly. Prospective philanthropic investors want to support organizations that demonstrate vision, momentum, and meaningful impact.
Beyond the headlines, tell the story behind the investment. Explain what the gift will accomplish. Highlight the students, faculty, or programs that will benefit. Help your community understand how philanthropy is changing lives.
Sharing philanthropic stories encourages others to make gifts and it also inspires students to think about their journey and future support of their alma mater. Promoting narratives of generosity also emphasizes that your institution is moving forward with purpose. Simply put, success begets success.
Celebrate the Journey
At AdvancementEDU, we believe strong fundraising programs are built through intentional leadership, healthy team culture, and consistent habits. Celebrating wins (both large and small) is one simple way to strengthen all three.
